Best months

Late June to early October, when the high trail and huts are normally accessible. July and August bring the easiest conditions and biggest crowds; September often gives cleaner air and the first dusting of snow.

Suggested focal lengths

16–35 mm for the full cirque and foreground; 50–100 mm to separate the towers and catch light on the faces.

Composition

The small ponds and broken limestone near the hut make better foreground than an empty trail. Keep the towers slightly off-centre and try a tighter vertical when cloud starts wrapping around the peaks.

Recommended arrival

Be on the Locatelli plateau 60–90 minutes before sunset. Allow roughly two hours from Rifugio Auronzo, more if you are carrying a full kit or walking back in the dark.

Access planning

The usual route starts at Rifugio Auronzo and crosses exposed high-alpine terrain. The toll road, bus, huts and trail are seasonal; carry a headlamp, warm layer and a plan for the return.

Parking: Rifugio Auronzo car park when the toll road is open; in busy periods access may require advance booking or the public bus.

Approach: About 5 km each way from Rifugio Auronzo via Forcella Lavaredo, with roughly 250 m of ascent.
