Old Man of Storr Viewpoint: sunset photography forecast
The strongest Storr view is above the Old Man, where the pinnacles open toward the Sound of Raasay. Sunrise can light the landscape from the side, but Skye weather often gives the better story: broken cloud, shafts of light and mist moving through the rocks.

Best months
April to June for long mornings and relatively lower rainfall; September and October for moodier weather and fewer midges. Winter requires proper mountain judgement.
Suggested focal lengths
16–35 mm for the full ridge; 50–100 mm to isolate pinnacles and distant islands.
Composition
Climb beyond the first close view so the Old Man separates from the surrounding rock. Use the sloping ground as a lead-in and keep checking behind you as cloud opens over the sea.
Recommended arrival
Start 90–120 minutes before sunrise and allow extra time for mud, wind and route-finding in darkness.
Access planning
The path is steep, rough and exposed to fast-changing weather. Carry a headlamp and waterproof layers, and avoid fragile shortcuts.
Parking: Official Old Man of Storr car park on the A855; pay and display.
Approach: Roughly 45–75 minutes uphill to the common upper viewpoints, with about 300–400 m of ascent.
