Männlichen: sunset photography forecast

At 2,225 m you stand directly opposite the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. The important thing to understand here is that the best light is usually behind you: the sun sets to the west while the alpenglow burns on the peaks to the south-east. The other important thing is the last cable car, which normally leaves before the light happens.

For photographers: shooting Männlichen

Best months

Summer into autumn, and especially the first snow on the high peaks while the valley is still green.

Suggested focal lengths

16–35 mm for the whole peak group; 70–200 mm for individual faces as the pink light moves down them

Composition

Frame the wall first and let the foreground ridge anchor the bottom. Keep shooting after the sun is down — the best colour on the peaks arrives late.

Recommended arrival

On the ridge at least an hour before sunset, and only if you have sorted the descent.

Access planning

Gondola from Grindelwald or cable car from Wengen, then the Royal Walk toward the summit. Standard descents finish around 17:00–17:30, so staying for sunset usually means a night at Berghaus Männlichen.

Parking: Grindelwald or Wengen valley stations

Approach: Cable car plus the Royal Walk, roughly 20 minutes uphill
