Chasseral: sunset photography forecast in the Jura

Chasseral is a clarity location. On an ordinary evening it is a pleasant ridge; after a cold front or a Föhn clearance the whole Alpine chain appears at once, from Säntis across the Bernese Alps to Mont Blanc. That difference is entirely about air, which is what makes it worth checking a forecast before driving up.

For photographers: shooting Chasseral

Best months

Spring to autumn while the summit road is open. Winter rewards the walk in when visibility is exceptional.

Suggested focal lengths

100–400 mm to compress the Alpine chain; 24–70 mm when the Jura meadows give you a foreground

Composition

Decide early whether the subject is the distant chain or the ridge you are standing on — they need different lenses and different spots.

Recommended arrival

45 minutes before sunset if you drive up; add the full route time in winter.

Access planning

Drive to the summit in season. In winter the road closes and you take the marked hiking or snowshoe route.

Parking: Summit parking when the road is open; valley parking at the winter trailhead

Approach: Short walk from summit parking, or a marked winter route
