Chureito Pagoda View: sunrise photography forecast

The Chureito view layers the pagoda, Fujiyoshida and Mount Fuji in one frame. Clear air is more important than dramatic cloud here—the mountain can disappear completely even on an otherwise pleasant day.

Will tomorrow's sunrise be worth it?

Simplified forecast from the open model run. The full forecast — a second model, your exact viewpoint, the hourly cloud timeline — is in the app.

Global model, about 13 km: less certain than in Europe.

Low cloud is resting on the viewpoint, so you will be inside it.

Clouds: Lit canvas above you, but you are inside the cloud

Your viewpoint is in cloud or fog — the colour above will be hard to see from here.

Almost no clouds above you — expect a clean but pale horizon glow rather than a red sky.

Most cloud is concentrated in one height band, so the scene has limited vertical separation.

Cloud cover changes between nearby and distant parts of the scene, adding texture and depth.

Broken low cloud (47%) — expect the light to come and go.

Light corridor is open

9% blocking cloud at the ray's height out to 350 km — the low sun's own path is clear. Cloud above that ray is judged separately.

Distant low cloud sits below the light ray (Earth's curvature) — it can't block the light.

Sun likely hidden. You're inside the cloud at the viewpoint — the sun will not be visible from here.

For photographers: shooting Chureito Pagoda View

Best months

November to February for the best odds of a clear Fuji; mid-April for cherry blossom and November for autumn colour, both with heavy crowds.

Suggested focal lengths

35–70 mm for pagoda and Fuji; 70–135 mm to compress the mountain behind the structure.

Composition

Leave space around the pagoda roof and use branches as a light frame rather than a wall. A slightly longer lens makes Fuji feel closer and removes busy city edges.

Recommended arrival

Arrive 60 minutes before sunrise on normal days and much earlier during blossom or autumn peak.

Access planning

The viewpoint is reached by hundreds of steps and can be tightly managed in peak seasons. Respect one-way systems, barriers and tripod restrictions.

Parking: Limited official Arakurayama Sengen Park parking; use Shimoyoshida Station during busy periods.

Approach: About 20–30 minutes uphill from Shimoyoshida Station, including roughly 400 steps.
